Follow the instructions below to complete your application.


1. Complete Online Application

Visit the University of Calgary's application portal to begin your application. 

You will need a UCID number. If you do not yet have a UCID, one can be obtained here

Access the myUofC portal to review the status of your application. 

2. Supporting Documents

All supporting documents must be uploaded to your application once it is submitted online. Please upload these documents as PDF files. 

  • Unofficial transcripts from all post-secondary institutions
  • Any official language test scores
  • MSS Thesis: One page research proposal
  • MSS Course: One page statement of intent
  • PhD: Three page research proposal
  • Writing sample

For those entering thesis-based MSS and PhD programs, consent from a faculty member willing to act as supervisor. 

3. Official Transcripts

Please send your Official Transcripts to:

4. Reference Letters

Students are asked to obtain two reference letters in support of their application. A suitable referee is an individual who is well acquainted with your education and abilities. References from your relatives, friends or colleagues are not acceptable. Referees should be academic in nature where at all possible, professional referees will be accepted in situations where the applicants' professional experience is most relevant.

Referees should be able to comment on your:

  • Academic ability and record 
  • Research ability and record 
  • Teaching and language ability 
  • Professional experience and skill (if applicable)

To request reference letters: 

  • Provide each of your referees with a copy of your research proposal or statement of intent
  • Provide your referees with the details of the program you are applying to (name of degree program), including the complete mailing address
  • Once the application has been submitted, an email will be sent to each referee with a link to the application. Once clicked, they will be able to answer referee questions and submit their letter
