Professor Stapleton Visits Nigeria

Professor Tim Stapleton recently returned from a month-long visit to Nigeria.  At the start of the trip he participated in the University of Ibadan’s 70th anniversary lecture series with a presentation on “Hugh Trenchard and the African Colonial Origins of Strategic Bombing.”  The lecture was held in the University of Ibadan’s Trenchard Hall which is named after the founder of the Royal Air Force (RAF) who had served as a British colonial officer in Nigeria during the first decade of the twentieth century.  Professor Stapleton also gave a presentation on his research on the British colonial military in Nigeria at the University of Ibadan’s Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies.   Moving on to Kaduna, he served as a visiting professor in the Department of History and War Studies at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) where he gave a series of guest lectures on aspects of military history, attended graduate thesis defences, and consulted with colleagues and students.  The visit concluded with research in the Enugu branch of the National Archives of Nigeria.
